B2B Marketing Automation Workshop
Format : Pre-Conference Workshop
Speakers
Shane Freeman, Principal , Okapi
Research shows that 50% of qualified leads are not ready to purchase. Yet 80% of leads that your sales teams disqualify will go on to purchase within 24 months. So how can you foster a relationship of collaboration between Marketing and Sales to both nurture these leads and eventually convert them into a successful sale? By using a “Sales-First” approach to content and the Inbound Methodology organizations can begin to align the needs of their sales and marketing teams to increase conversion rates, shorten sales cycles, and win more deals.   While still highly valuable for marketers, this workshop delivers optimal value for organizations who can commit to sending a leader from both their marketing and sales teams. By examining the challenges of both, we will use tools, strategies, and technology to build a bridge between the two departments and allow both to return to work with a deeper understanding of how best to work together.    During this highly interactive session we will:   - Discuss Inbound methodology basics including personas, buyer’s journey, and full customer lifecycle - Developing a content roadmap to integrate with your sales cycle and the buyer’s journey - Understand different types of content and when to use them in the sales process - Explore the challenges that each department faces and how to work together to minimize them  - Examine ways to use Marketing Automation and CRM technology to ease those challenges and deliver the right content to the right prospect at just the right time - Decide what success looks like by understanding the KPIs of both departments, how they are deeply interconnected, and what data can be collected to foster positive change

The death of marketing as we know it is upon us. For some marketers, the uncertainty of digital marketing can be so scary that it causes them to freeze up and stay in their comfort zone. For another group of marketers, they aren’t even aware of the change that is coming due to a lack of interest in the profession and continued education. Then there is a group of marketers that are ready to embrace change to adapt to what will come out of the ashes to build an audience and drive business opportunities. These adaptive marketers are the ones I have labeled the Renaissance Marketers.   In this session, Jeff will cover several types of marketing approaches and content types that are growing in popularity and will disrupt the traditional assembly line driven, text-heavy approaches most of us have used since the advent of the Internet. Then, using Agile methodologies, he will show us a path of change that will allow us to become more well-rounded content creators.    Jeff has a unique background as an award-winning software developer, creator of the largest technical blog community, and a child of the Internet with his first website created in 1994 at the age of 13.

The marketplace is rapidly changing and so are donors. It's important for nonprofits to: listen to the concerns of their donor base; utilize insights to create impactful campaigns; encourage support of their organization; and leverage technology to better serve their community.   Donors are adapting to technological change quicker than nonprofits. Nonprofit marketers must step up to the plate with their B2C and B2B counterparts when it comes to understanding the voice of their donors and creating personalized digital experiences.   Hear the Donor's Voice It’s important to know what your donors think: their desires; their expectations; their experience with your organization. Today's donors are untethered, highly mobile, have high expectations, and wield a lot of power in their pocketbooks.   Utilize Insights Nonprofits need to tap their data and insights to improve communications with donors across channels. Data becomes the primary fuel for personalization, content creation, campaigns and marketing messaging.   Leverage Technology Today's marketers must be fast...but not too fast. When it comes to Martech (Marketing Technology) nonprofits need to increase their speed of adoption in order to create more meaningful and lasting experiences for donors.   Today's nonprofit marketer draws on technology, data and the customer voice to anticipate what people are looking for and develop meaningful content and impactful campaigns and events. Power lies in consistent, continual messaging and conveying the great benefits an organization brings to the community.

It may seem counter-intuitive, but if you, as a company, want your employees to advocate for you on social media, you can't make it all about you. But isn't that the point, you say?   The goal may be to build brand champions, but the approach to accomplishing this has to be employee-first. In fact, I would argue that the only way to create effective advocates for your company, brand, or even an entire industry is to help your people shine. How do you do that?   Identify your key players. It’s important to recognize that not everyone is going to want to engage on social media about your company. That’s okay. I’ll talk through how to identify those people who are passionate about what they do as well as those subject matter experts who can be thought leaders.   Build them up. The next step is to help develop these people. Help them see social media as a professional development opportunity, find their personal brand, voice, etc. It’s also important to teach them how to engage in effective conversations and build trust first.   Let them engage. The next part is to actually let them go. I’ll discuss ways companies can empower employees through feedback, testing and trying new content types, channels, etc.   Make it easy for them.  I’ll share several tips on how to make it as easy as possible for employees to share their voices online as your employee social advocacy efforts grow.

God as an archetype is and has been many things. Chief among those archetypal roles, God used to be the entity to whom we posed all of our questions.   It isn't an easy thing to usurp God, but Google has done it, at least as far as that role is concerned. The importance of where this places Google in terms of how it relates to the way humans engage with content can't be overstated. Google is, easily, the God of the internet.   When you ask Google a question, you aren't simply searching for information, you're signaling intent. Intent is the single most important catalytic phase of the buying cycle. Giving marketers the ability to deliver targeted and relevant content to segmented users immediately upon the indication of intent is, so far, the single greatest advent in the world of marketing.   However, Google Ads is so much more than a simple advertising mechanism. It's an entire organic ecosystem in and of itself. It allows you to determine how competitive a market is, who your competitors (and competitive alternatives) are, what customers respond to, which messaging resonates with your prospects, where you may be facing a cyclical market (and where those cycles exist), and so much more.   Google Ads is the finger to the pulse that every business should be taking advantage of. It can (and should) inform everything you do in the realm of digital marketing. From search engine optimization to content marketing & email engagement.

When attending a conference like MDMC, you meet like-minded marketers and entrepreneurs. You also meet people who do EXACTLY what you do, serve EXACTLY who you serve, and speak EXACTLY your language. Some of us jump immediately to seeing these people as competitors and try to figure out how to position against them. However, there is a growing trend in St. Louis and throughout the midwest of collaboration over competition.    During this panel featuring cooperative companies, Influence & Co, Beanstalk Web Solutions, Atomic Revenue, and Bright Coral Creative, we will share how each company focuses on inclusion, collaboration, and community building. Have you ever taken part in a social media challenge? Whether it's a 7 day Instagram challenge, a 12-day workout challenge, a 5 day Facebook Live challenge, or a 21-day clean eating challenge, just to name a few. They can be a lot of fun to participate in, but they can also be an incredibly profitable way to launch your new program, product and or service!   Essentially, a social media challenge is an "x day free-course" used to teach and engage your audience on a specific subject matter; all in an effort to lead them towards your new course, program and or live training at the end of the challenge.   Social challenges offer a unique strategy to super boost engagement with your current audience, increase your know, love, and trust factor, AND build your email list and community.   Challenges not only allow you to give massive value in a short amount of time, but they're also fun! And isn't social media supposed to be fun?    Most people try to replicate challenges from the outside, without implementing or understanding all the behind the scenes moving parts that are essential to hosting a successful social challenge.   Vanessa has hosted dozens of successful and profitable challenges over the last 5 years, and in this breakout session she'll breakdown the exact steps needed to execute a successful social media challenge.   Social Media Challenges: The New Way in Marketing - Fun. Simple. Highly Engaging. Results Oriented and Easy Sales.

Ben Williams, Director Of Advocacy, Eyeo
When I arrived at eyeo I didn’t even get a laptop. My desk felt like it was made of reinforced paper, so it’s probably good that I didn’t add any weight to it anyway. I was one of the first 10 employees in 2013, and before me stood a challenge I don’t know if I would have accepted in hindsight: How to tell the story of a no-holds-barred ad blocker that had seen the light and wanted to be understood by advertisers, publishers and its 40 million users.   Now with 100 million users and 150 employees, 2018 looks a bit different, even if challenges remain. I invite you to let me tell you the story of how we’ve managed that hot message, internally and externally, for the past five years and the many, many lessons we’ve learned. It’s been bloody, it’s been graying (literally, look at my hair when you see me) and it’s been a hell of a lot of fun.

Marketing and driving leads in today’s B2B environment is challenging – especially with the plethora of marketing activities you have at your disposal. Your target is seeing more brand messages than ever in their inbox, has endless service options and completes much of their research online before even thinking about contacting your company.   This session covers how you can market effectively in the noisy B2B marketing environment by talking to your prospects in a way that is personalized to who they are, how they respond to messages and where they are in the sales cycle.   Taking a cross-channel approach will allow you to meet your buyers wherever they are, and stand out from your competition who are overly focused on one marketing tactic. This session includes real-life cross-channel examples and results and ROI from my own B2B marketing work.   We’ll cover the best practices for the traditional channels including branding, referrals, events, print, and direct mail. Additionally, we’ll dig into the top tools for the digital channels like your website, blog, webinars, email, automation, video, mobile, paid search, SEO, social media and retargeting.   Yes, the thought of building a cross-channel strategy is overwhelming, especially if you are limited on resources. I’ll cover how I’ve used different platforms - on both small and large marketing teams - to help you make your channels run like race cars. Leave with a better understanding of your targets, knowing how to pick the most efficient marketing method and how you will measure success.

Live Video Broadcasts are full of surprises and unexpected moments. What you can count on though is that 80% of your target audience would rather watch a live video than read a blog post from your brand. And 82% prefer live video over social media posts.   But before we wade into the deep waters of live video, it's helpful to get our bearings and understand exactly why live video is so effective at driving engagement. Just as photos tickle our brains in ways text alone cannot, live content taps into powerful psychological motivators.   We will navigate those psychological waters and through that understanding, be prepared to create far more effective videos for your brand.

Digital marketers have unique expertise in understanding customer value, technology and organizational success, making them more powerful than ever before to become the implementers of the company vision - to become product leaders. Their role is to have an insatiable curiosity to understand the customer, to connect people to meaningful solutions, not to simply sell products. Product leadership is transforming business models because it’s the way you talk about the product, it’s the way you acquire customers, the end-to-end sales process, the experience that someone has when they’re going through that process. That’s all part of the product, at least in the customer’s mind.

Obele Brown-West, Executive Vice President, Client Experience Digital & Innovation Lead - Central Region, Weber Shandwick
At first launch, social media channels were touted as a means for connection - starting first with friend connection and eventually evolving to connection with brands. With social media's growth came its monetization and a slow brand movement away from 1:1 connection and fan engagement in order to prioritize advertising and ROI social media activities. However, while brands may not have prioritized 1:1 connection, their increased social media footprint (fueled by advertising investment) has led to nearly 100% of consumers looking to social media as their only means of connection, education and engagement from a brand.   In this session, Obele Brown West, EVP, Client Experience Digital & Innovation Lead for Weber Shandwick's Midwest region, will explain how the opportunity brands are missing to impact customer experience and brand sentiment via social media.   Join this session and learn: - How platforms are re-embracing their focus on connection and how brands can embrace this re-evolution - The tools and strategy marketers should implement to lean into influencing social customer experience - Case studies that showcase how Weber Shandwick has partnered with clients to take advantage of opportunities to impact customer experience

That being said, brands should remain vigilant during this time, and not act on impulse once IGTV decides to monetize. By now, your organization should be built to capture that all-important resource – customer data. After all, customer data can impact everything from identifying new markets, revamping product lines, to marketing more aggressively. But data is only part of the equation. Organizations that win marketing wars are the ones that use data and business intelligence to unearth and leverage actionable insights.   You’re hearing much more about business intelligence (BI) – the process of transforming raw data into meaningful information – for a reason. BI makes you smarter, so you can make better decisions, often in real time. The power of BI is evident in organizations of all sizes. It’s a matter of understanding and harnessing the insights that exist in every company’s data.   So how do organizations make the data-to-insights leap? In this session, Jenny Bristow, CEO of Creative Anvil, will provide practical advice for senior leaders that will:   - Illustrate the difference between data and insights - Define business intelligence and provide real-life examples of how organizations are using insights and business intelligence to capture market share - Provide an overview of the most up-to-date tools to capture data - Share a roadmap for interpreting data to unearth true insights - Discuss strategies to implement a data-first approach within your organization   If you’re responsible for ROI in your organization, you don’t want to miss this session.

As the Internet evolved into a tug-of-war for market share of attention, humans have adapted. The human attention span is now less than that of a goldfish: dropping from 12 seconds at the dawn of the new millennium, to just 8 seconds in 2016. That comes as no surprise; we take in 34 gigabytes of information, outside of work, every day. Sorting through clickbait and ads has worn out human patience, producing a generation of word skimmers and information winnowers.    To adapt to evolving behavior, big media annually invests over $4.1 billion to develop novel approaches to capture readers’ attention. The aggregate result is a billion-dollar, ever-changing laundry list of investments in ‘best practices’: curation & mobile-first from Flipboard ($210MM), aggregation from Huffington Post ($315MM), listicles & quizzes from BuzzFeed ($446MM), native content & sharing from Facebook ($2.3B), and visual stories from Snapchat ($3B).   Keeping up with these annual changes in content marketing strategies, for private companies, can be not only expensive, but also tedious. The key to staying ahead in tomorrow's market is not artificial intelligence, IoT integrations, live streams, or AR/VR—though that may help. Future-proof strategy is defined by principles, not technologies: authentic brands, human connection, engaging visuals; in short, the shift from content to experience.   In this talk, we'll attempt to summarize the content trends that will set the successful apart from the outdated, and highlight methods to stay cutting-edge. These insights are derived from our my data, from millions of readers and that of many household name-brands.

Your employees – who have been immersed for years in social media, where circulating the latest memes, GIFs, viral videos and snarky corporate Twitter content is the norm – often have an incomplete understanding of intellectual property laws. This puts you at risk for an expensive lawsuit. We will explain how to avoid trademark, copyright, defamation, and right of publicity claims in your content, and how to protect your own creations and photography from unauthorized use on the web. Has your organization possibly “borrowed” some content from the Internet in the past? We will give you some tips on auditing your content and social media feeds, and how to find alternative sources of content that you can license for your own use. We will also give a brief overview of fair use and just how far that right extends. Don’t meme before thinking: Use this IP primer to educate your marketing team and ensure you only create and share authorized — yet still highly clickable — content.

Customer Journey Mapping has become a hot topic for designers from around the globe, but what are Customer Journey Maps and why are they so important? In a nutshell, the importance of Journey Maps can be summed up in the following quote from Albert Einstein:   “If I had an hour to solve a problem, I’d spend 55 minutes framing the problem, and 5 minutes thinking about solutions.”   Customer Journey Maps are what provides context for the overall experience. Whether you are working on a digital product, a marketing campaign, or a core business service, understanding the ecosystem of experience enables businesses to effectively strategize around the human need and design for the context of their broader experiences. This ecosystem includes all of the experiences the customer has with your product or service (called the "Frontstage"), as well as all of the "Backstage" activities that happen at the home office and beyond to facilitate a positive customer experience.   Journey Maps have been around in various forms for years now, but few have been truly effective in helping to guide businesses in defining their future customer experiences. In this session we will work our way through the importance of Customer Journey Mapping, best practices for when and how to create Journey Maps, and practical exercises to provide tangible experience as well as a physical takeaway.   Journey Maps are no longer a novelty graphic for visual-minded practitioners. Come learn how to activate your business through effective Customer Journey Mapping.

What leads to a crisis? This was once relatively simple to determine – perhaps it was an angry consumer taking to Twitter to share frustrations, or a local news story that gained national attention. Today, technological advances and the rise of bots, fake news, the dark web and artificial intelligence, means the root of a crisis has become extremely challenging to pinpoint.   So, how do companies in today’s changing media environment adjust accordingly? Crisis experts from Weber Shandwick, Fleishman Hillard, Bayer Corporation and the University of North Florida will discuss important communication tools for navigating the nuances of today’s digital-forward landscape, how to get ahead of a crisis and ways to dissect the method and motive of the conversation to determine the best course of action.

One of the keys to great digital marketing is location-based audiences, or reaching a target market based upon their current or previous visited locations. As people continue to spend much of their online time browsing social media, marketers continue to increase their ad spend on sites like Facebook and Instagram. In this session, Reveal Mobile CEO Brian Handly will explore the intersection between location-based marketing and social media, told through two case studies.    The first case study explores how a regional franchise group for a fast-casual Mexican chain used location-based audience segments and custom audiences. They built their campaign to drive more app downloads by reaching visitors to their own locations, competitive stores, and peer locations.    The second study highlights a campaign designed to find and reach Elvis fans for an anniversary album release by using a combination of location-based marketing and social media custom audiences.   Attendees will learn more sophisticated approaches to location-based audiences, and how to apply them to digital advertising and social media marketing.
